泉生虫属(多识植物百科 和 中文版维基百科 所采用的翻译)Fonticula下仅包含一种,即泉生虫F.alba。泉生虫是一种特殊的细胞型黏菌,在繁殖阶段它会形成网络状物质,并组成火山状的结构。孢堆原位于火山内部,孢堆原内的产孢细胞逐渐分化为孢子,然后从火山口“喷发”出来,在火山口处形成一个粘液状的孢子囊,并留下一个空心的,锥状的柄。类似于网柄菌,泉生虫的黏变形体也有丝状的伪足,但不同于网柄菌,其线粒体有盘状嵴(discoid cristae)。泉生虫十分稀少,至今仅被发现、分离和培养过一次,该种在1960年代便已经成功培养,但在1979年才被正式发表。菌种可以在American Type Culture Collection购买 (ATCC 38817)。
